If you are reading this then the zombie apocalypse is either drawing near or is upon us. Either way you need to prepare. The first thing to realize is that the money in your pocket will be worthless. ATM cards, credit cards and even coins mean nothing. Currency will be replaced with goods and services. Medicine is on the top of the value chart. Food is a close second. Dentists will be in high demand. Those that are not infected, suffering from a toothache will trade just about anything to stop that pain. Weapons are of great value but most will not part with the weapons that they have. Ammunition is a great trade item. You may encounter ammo that does not fit your weapons but that doesn't mean that they aren't gold to someone else. More on how to trade with other non-zombie types in later chapters. The first few days are critical. You need to ransack, loot, gather or steal; whatever you want to call it, any medicine, canned food, bottled drinks, powered drinks, vitamins and anything else you might deem useful in the coming weeks. A brief list of items that you will find helpful and valuable for trade:

toilet paper
hunting knife
fishing pole
guns
radio
batteries
battery powered lights
candles
lighters
matches
canned food of any kind
medicine of any kind
bottled water
weapons of any kind
ammunition
fuel
vehicle
clothing depending on the climate
tools (not powered unless you have a generator)

This is not a definitive list. Depending on your location, time of year and the number of survivors, both in your party and in the surrounding area, you may need other items that are not listed here. Hospitals are a good place to start to build your wealth. The medications and to be quite honest, the drugs you will find can make or break you. They can break you if you start to abuse the narcotics. A hospital is also a good place to hole up if you can clear the zombies out. They usually will have their own generator and you can probably find enough fuel to power the place for quite some time. Those of you that find yourself in a major city at the time of the zombie apocalypse will want to find a tall building to call home. From a higher vantage you can see danger coming your way. Also there will be lots of apartments with plenty of food and medicine to find. This type of search in close quarters is covered in a later chapter as well. If you are fortunate enough to find yourself near an armory and can get in; this may prove difficult due to the fact that some survivors might be military personnel, you will want to gather all the weapons and ammunition you can or use the armory as a place to stay. If you are good with a hammer and can build, you have a useful skill that can be both beneficial for yourself and for others. You can trade services to the right individuals looking to settle in an area. In the beginning, people will be on the move; not sure of where it is safe. As time passes, the threat of zombies will lessen and people will seek out places to call home. Some will settle in neighborhoods with houses that are already standing. Most will look for unpopulated wooded areas to call home. These people will need carpenters.

To recap: in the zombie apocalypse, the first place I would raid is a Home Depot or a gun shop; not a bank.
